Soccer Day

One of the major events in the Orange River area is the pre-season soccer day. This event originated as a form of thanksgiving from the growers to their labourers for the hard work done in preparing the harvest, but also to encourage them for the harvest seasons to come.

The day has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years and now comprises of 12 soccer teams competing in the senior men’s division; a netball tournament for the female workers and the recently added junior soccer division to cater for boys under 12. Over 1100 farm workers participate in the day, including 275 families and 250 players.

The event continues its popularity and the positive feedback and spirit it brings to the packhouses as the harvest season starts is priceless.
